“This is a blend of tempranillo (87 percent), graciano, mazuelo and garnacha grown at the Finca Ygay, Murrieta's estate in the hills above Logrono. Aged in American oak for 18 months, it developed a hint of mintiness over its silken black-currant and tobacco flavors (think menthol cigarette smoked with aristocratic nonchalance in Monaco). Bright and somber, tense and refined, this wine's limestone edges carry the essence of Rioja in a healthy wine that seems to get its style directly from the ground.”

“Black olive and forest floor notes frame tangy black cherry and currant flavors in this polished red. Well-integrated tannins and orange peel acidity support the supple texture. Balanced, in a savory style. Tempranillo, Graciano, Mazuelo and Garnacha. Drink now through 2026.”

“This is very structured and powerful with a dense and rich palate of ripe fruit and hints of toasted oak. Full and layered. Structured. Released February 2020. Needs a few years of bottle age. Try after 2021.”

“I also tasted an unbottled sample of the 2016 Rioja Reserva, which should be bottled in a couple of months, before the summer. What I tasted was the final blend, and it represents the year—2016 was a cooler year, and the wine also goes in that direction. 2016 saw a large crop, and the grapes for this cuvée were harvested at the end of September, going toward more finesse and subtleness, combined with the natural power. There was a change in the winery in 2016 that was finalized in 2018 with the new winery. The wine is textured and fine, and it's more elegant than the 2015 I tasted next to it. The detail and texture on the palate is different, and the quality of the tannins is completely different.”

Overview

Marqués de Murrieta Reserva is a traditional Rioja wine crafted in the classic Murrieta signature style and enjoying all the benefits of modern winemaking philosophy, equipment and techniques. Made from Tempranillo, Garnacha, Mazuelo and Graciano, this wine embodies ripe fruit qualities with a perfect balance of acidity, supple roundness on the palate and a hint of new oak. The Marqués de Murrieta vineyards on the 741-acre Ygay Estate are located in Rioja Alta between 320 meters to 485 meters above sea level.

The Cebrián-Sagarriga family, who in 1983 acquired the winery, established in 1852, has a distinct winemaking philosophy that is founded in the pursuit of quality and excellence through tradition and innovation.

Winemaking

Tangible proof of elegance, balance and constancy characteristic of the winery and its surrounding vineyards situated in the Ygay Estate, this is a red reserva wine with a balanced aging of 16 months in new and partly new American oak barrels and a year and a half in bottle. The result is an elegant wine that combines complexity and fineness, summing up the best attributes of Marqués de Murrieta's identity and actuality.

Grapes are first de-stemmed and then fermented in stainless steel tanks for eight days at controlled temperature in constant skin contact. During fermentation, pumping over and punching down operations are regularly carried out. These processes ensure both effective and gentle color and aroma extraction. Afterwards, the solid parts of the grapes are pressed in vertical presses with double screws.

Tasting Notes

Marqués de Murrieta Reserva 2016 shows remarkable fresh fuit aromas; strawberry, cherry and hints of flowers, eucalyptus tree, thyme and fine woods. In the mouth, the wine is harmonious, fresh and it has polished tannins that provides the wine with a pleasent texture. Its fruity long finish, keeps an outstanding fresh feeling.

Harvest Notes

The winter is characterized by two phases in terms of rainfall: November and December with few rains and a January and February with heavy rainfall, which means that the accumulation of water in depth is important. The minimum temperatures are higher than normal. March continues with abundant rainfall, followed by a less rainy spring and above average temperatures. The good climatic conditions favor a good vegetative development. Flowering is somewhat later and produces a good development of inflorescences. The summer is characterized by the scarcity of rain. Temperatures are cool until July, changing in August, in which they rise. Insolation hours are high for much of the summer. The veraison begins at the end of July. In mid-August there is a vegetative stop that lasts until September. The ripening is very slow and the grains are medium-sized. From September 13th until the 17th, 11 mm of rain are collected, barely visible on the ground, although they are easily absorbed by the grape. The harvest begins on October 1st in the red grape vineyards and lasted until October 22th. Worth mentioning is the “incredible” weight of the clusters, so that yields soared in all varieties.

Food Pairing

Pairs beautifully with baked red snapper and grilled vegetables, white wine, apple, lime and rosemary; Cameros truffle with mushrooms, and cabbage with extra-virgin olive oil; Milk-fed lamb chops with buttermilk, asparagus and red wine; Suckling pig confit with its crunchy skin and caramelized apple. Decanting the wine for 20 minutes is recommended. Best enjoyed between 59º- 61ºF.
