“Fresh black fruits, cherries and wild strawberries on the nose. Balanced and medium body with elegant ripeness and good fruits. Ripe strawberries. Good length. Really enjoyable now and can wait as well. Always a favorite of mine.”

“The 2016 Pinot Noir has a light bouquet that doesn‘t really grip the grape variety with both hands. It is clean but rather anonymous. The palate is well balanced with sappy red berry fruit, a keen line of acidity with a rather short but pleasant finish.”

Overview

Meerlust Estate has been part of the Myburgh family tradition for eight generations, dating back to 1693. Long recognized for producing world-class wines, the Meerlust Estate is singularly rich in charm and history. Meerlust produces wines that are true to the intrinsic character of their vineyards located in the Stellenbosch region. The diverse soils, the unique coastal climate and over 300 years of dedication are all essential components of Meerlust’s complex, rich and truly distinctive wines.

Winemaking

Fermentation takes place in small stainless steel cuvees with regular pigeage for gentle extraction. Partial un-inoculated fermentation occurred before pressing directly in French oak tight-grained Hogsheads for malolactic fermentation. After racking, the wine was matured in 52% new Alliers Hogsheads and 48% second-fill Hogsheads for 12 months before bottling.

Tasting Notes

This wine has an intense, vivid translucent youthful purple-ruby appearance. The wine shows pronounced lifted perfume on the nose with red berry fruit, musk, wild mushrooms and hints of savoury richness and spice and a clean vibrant minerality. On the palate there are very pure Pinot fruit flavors on entry with red cherry and musk flavors coupled with fresh acidity. The wine has layered complexity with great elegance and finesse. Very fine lacy, almost powdery tannin on the finish.

Harvest Notes

Selected from 3 clones of Pinot Noir with an average age of 18 years old, situated on loamy gravel topsoil with clay sub-soil. The vineyards are located at the highest point on the Estate (85-120m) with South facing aspect to benefit from the cool, maritime breeze from False Bay. 30% vendage vert (green harvesting cluster removal) at 60% veraison to ensure concentration and even ripening.

Food Pairing

This wine pairs well with white and red meats, Parma ham, grilled line fish, tuna, wild mushrooms and cheese. Suggested serving temperature is 60° - 65° F (16° - 18°C).
